NewsEpilepsy Awareness in Canterbury26 Feb 2009 Epilepsy New Zealand’s Canterbury/West Coast Branch has been operating in the region for 50 years, and recently celebrated Epilepsy Awareness Week from 9 - 14 February (which is also Valentine’s Day). It’s a little known fact that St. Valentine is the patron saint of Epilepsy.
As part of the celebrations a free seminar was held on “Epilepsy in Primary School Children” with Dr Paul Shillito as guest speaker. The event was generously sponsored by Sanofi-Aventis, and opened with a stunning morning tea prepared by The Antigua Boatsheds.
The seminar was a huge success with over 30 parents, teachers and other professionals attending, each expressing their appreciation on the interesting and informative session. Dr Shillito stressed the importance of treating children with epilepsy as normally as possible. He suggested a few sensible limitations around cycling on public roads and climbing, which could be applied to most children of a similar age. A special thank you to Dr Shillito, who gave his time in order to present this seminar.
